Tabernacle United Church is a progressive congregation in West Philadelphia seeking a part-time Minister of Music and Choir Director who will create and lead a culture of congregational singing and participation in worship, drawing people closer to God, one another, and the world through music. Drawing from a diverse array of musical traditions and styles, including sacred, secular, ancient, classical, modern, contemplative/chant, folk and gospel, the Minister of Music will lead and accompany ensembles of varied sizes, as well as the congregation. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent church music experience and demonstrated experience in church music leadership, as well as these skills/attributes:

  • Proficiency in piano

  • Conducting/teaching vocal music to singers of all skill-levels and experience

  • A strong voice for leading/teaching congregational singing

  • An engaging presence in worship leadership, modeling energy for the congregation

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and administrative skills

  • A commitment to helping others discover their voice and musical gifts

  • Responsibilities include:

  • Working collaboratively with the Pastor and Worship Team to plan worship services

  • Rehearsing with the choir 3X per month for the choir to sing in 3 services a month

  • Accompanying hymns and other service music on the piano during worship

  • Playing the prelude, postlude and offertory on the piano during worship

  • Overseeing Tabernacle’s music library and the budget for the purchase of new music

  • Providing Sunday bulletin music information to the Office Manager in a timely fashion

  • Recruiting/scheduling substitute musicians during time off or guest musicians for special services

  • Other music-related activities as needed

  • Pluses:

  • Skill playing another instrument in addition to piano (guitar, drums, flute, etc.)

  • Experience leading and singing with small ensembles (fewer than 10 singers)

  • Ability to improvise, arrange and/or compose worship music

Tabernacle is affiliated with the United Church of Christ and the Presbyterian Church (USA). We have one weekly worship service, Sunday at 10 am (avg. attendance: 65), including one jazz/praise service per month, as well as occasional special services throughout the year. Our sanctuary is equipped with a lovely Yamaha baby grand piano and there is a recently-acquired upright piano in close proximity to the church’s Music Office; Tabernacle does not have an organ.
