MAY 5

SUNDAY OUT!/IMMIGRANT JUSTICE SUNDAY

Texts: Revelation 21:1-6 & Acts 11:1-18

Vision

The Scripture passages this morning are about people receiving and sharing a
vision they have received from God. Peter reports to the church in Jerusalem what
he has experienced in a vision and how it has changed him. In a trance, Peter saw
a sheet come down from heaven with a variety of animals on it. This vision
inspired change in Peter’s life as he has a new understanding of his relationship
to others whom he had previously considered outsiders and unclean.

Preaching: Kathryn Aikins
Prayers: Todd Koser
Liturgist: Susan Teegen-Case
Shepherds: Lee Pugh & Bill Simpson
A/V Tech: Richard Kalwaic
Quote: Donald Wargo
Co-Officiating Communion: Maurine Doggett & Kathryn Aikins
Setting up & Serving Communion: Todd Koser
Cleaning up & Serving Communion: Jessica Culley
Picking up Communion Bread: Lee Pugh
Greeters: Maurine Doggett & Jim Thacker
Coffee Hour: Mike Ehling & Ginny Rice
Counting Offering: Vic Compher & Susan Teegen-Case
Recycling: Ginny Rice
Taking Food Donations to Cathedral: Chris Purdom

MAY 12

ASCENSION SUNDAY

Luke 24:44-53, Ephesians 1:15-23 & John 17:20-26

Out of the Head, Into the Body, Then, Out of the Body into Ecstasy

Sometimes we think too much. Sometimes faith and religion get reduced to what you
believe. But to get to the immeasurable greatness of God's power and the oneness of
spirit that Jesus prayed for we have to get out of our heads and into our bodies.
In this way we just might experience the mystical realities of the spirit in new
ways.

Preaching: Beverly Dale
Prayers: Mike Ehling
Liturgist: Lynn Lees
Shepherds: Todd Koser & Bill Simpson
A/V Tech: Jessica Culley
Quote: Holly Phares
Greeters: Ken & Martha Gritter
Coffee Hour: Charlene & Vic Compher
Counting Offering: Chris Purdom & Ginny Rice
Recycling: Barbara Purdom
Taking Food Donations to Cathedral: Lee Pugh

MAY 19

PENTECOST

Texts: Psalm 104:24-34, 35b & Acts 2:1-21

Speaking in Tongues

Today is Pentecost! In Acts 2 we learn that as a great diversity of people were
together in Jerusalem, they were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak
in other languages. What did they speak about? Acts tells us that both Jews and
Gentiles spoke and heard about "God's mighty acts in their own language." Women
and men, young and old, sons and daughters, were prophesying and speaking out.
Our reflection will center on hearing about God's mighty acts, in our own language.

Preaching: Kathryn Aikins
Prayers: Chris Purdom
Liturgist: Nicole Diroff
Shepherds: Vic Compher & Maurine Doggett
A/V Tech: Chris Purdom
Quote: Barbara Purdom
Greeters: Mike Ehling & Jim Gerhard
Coffee Hour: Deborah Ahrens & Geneva Butz
Counting Offering: Jim Thacker & Jean Erb
Recycling: Shawn Megill Legendre
Taking Food Donations to Cathedral: Megan Gibson

MAY 26

TRINITY SUNDAY

Texts: Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31 & Acts 2:43-47

Making a Way out of No Way

When the Holy Spirit descended on Pentecost, people were amazed and confused, asking
each other, "What does this mean?" (Acts 2:12) Not a surprising response considering
what people just witnessed! Today we will pick up from last Sunday and reflect
further on the implications and "aftermath" of Pentecost. What are the marks of a
Spirit-filled church?

Preaching: Kathryn Aikins
Writing Prayers: Beverly Dale (PAPERLESS!)
Liturgist: Chris Purdom
Shepherds: Todd Koser & Lynn Lees
A/V Tech: Barbara Purdom
Quote: Mike Ehling
Greeters: Sarah Hill & Bill Simpson
Coffee Hour: Mike Ehling & Ginny Rice
Counting Offering: Russell Baldwin & Maurine Doggett
Taking Recycling: Susan Teegen-Case
Taking Food Donations to Cathedral: Lucinda Megill Legendre

APRIL 14

Texts: John 14:25-27 & Acts 9:1-20

Spirit Moving

Justo Gonzalez has appropriately named the book of Acts in the Bible, "The Acts
of the Spirit", based on his understanding that the main character of the book
is really the Spirit! In this Easter season, we will be looking at stories of
the Spirit moving in the bodies, hearts and minds of Jesus’ early followers.
What was the Holy Spirit doing? How was She moving? And what does that mean for
us today? In the passage we look at today, the Spirit moved powerfully in Saul's
life, as he began to turn away from a life of violence and domination toward a
life of humility and solidarity with the persecuted.

Preaching: Kathryn Aikins
Prayers: Chris Purdom
Liturgist: Andy Lees
Shepherds: Vic Compher & Anne Whiting
A/V Tech: Bill Simpson
Quote: Susan Teegen-Case
Greeters: Jessica & Katrina Culley
Coffee Hour: Jim Thacker & Maurine Doggett
Counting Offering: Deborah Ahrens & Donald Wargo
Recycling: Jim Thacker
Taking Food Donations to Cathedral: Maurine Doggett

APRIL 21
EARTH SUNDAY

Texts: Manifesto: Mad Farmer Liberation Front by Wendell Berry & Acts 1:1-14

Manifest

Today is Earth Sunday. We will read the beginning of the book of Acts, when Jesus
is lifted up into the heavens after his resurrection and his early followers are
left to wonder how to live as witnesses to a new way of being. In his poem and in
many of his writings, Wendell Berry invites all of us to practice resurrection in
the here and now, and in relationship to God’s creation. On this Earth Sunday, we
will explore themes of resurrection and working toward living life in God's Great
Economy (to use Berry's language).

Preaching: Kathryn Aikins
Prayers: Holly Phares
Liturgist: Angela Kent
Shepherds: Donald Wargo & Lynn Lees
A/V Tech: Todd Koser
Quote: Deborah Ahrens
Greeters: Andy & Lynn Lees
Coffee Hour: Sam & Verona Stern
Counting Offering: Russell Baldwin & Chris Purdom
Recycling: Jim Gerhard
Taking Food Donations to Cathedral: Megan Gibson

APRIL 28

Texts: Psalm 148 & Matthew 13:31-32

The Mustard Seed

The passage from Paul's letter to the Corinthians is one that many of us have
heard before: "If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old
has passed away; see everything has become new." Paul is saying that this
"newness in Christ" is what we experience as we engage in the ministry of
reconciliation. This is a ministry to which all are called. Why would
reconciliation ministry be so important to Paul? Themes of reconciliation also
occur in the parable that Jesus tells to anyone who has ears to hear.

Preaching: Kathryn Aikins
Prayers: Deb Burnham (paperless!)
Liturgist: Deb Burnham
Shepherds: Ginny Rice & Donald Wargo
A/V Tech: Chris Purdom
Quote: Deb Burnham
Greeters: Carrie, Ellie & Susan Pierce
Coffee Hour: Jessica & Katrina Culley
Counting Offering: Susan Teegen-Case & Angela Kent
Recyclnig: Deborah Ahrens
Taking Food Donations to Cathedral: Jim Gerhard

I had dream the night before Easter that I died and
then came back to life. I dreamt that everything was coming to an end. Everything was
fading in front of me. The bright sky turned blurry and hazy. Then things turned black.
I awakened with bright lights and a breath of fresh air greeting me. It was Easter
morning. As the day went on, I soon began to put the vision’s pieces together to make
a puzzle of life. All the good things that I had not noticed before suddenly were very
clear.
MARCH 24
PALM/PASSION SUNDAY

Texts: Luke 19:28-40 & Luke+22:39-23:49

Passion

In worship today, we will move from the joyous shouts of "Hosannah" to hearing
the story of betrayal, abandonment, torture and death that Jesus experienced in
his journey to the cross. His suffering is the suffering we see in our world
today in the lives of the poor and abandoned. The cross reminds us of the cost
of sinfulness--exploitation, chaos, violence and death. This is not a pretty
picture, but it is the truth. We come together on this Sunday to witness to the
truth, so that we might be set free again and given courage in our days ahead.

Reading the Passion: Kathryn Aikins, Deb Ahrens, Richard Kalwaic, Deb Burnham

& Beverly Dale
Writing Prayers: Deb Burnham
Liturgist: Megan Gibson
Shepherds: Bill Simpson & Anne Whiting
A/V Tech: Chris Purdom
Quote: Pauline Abernathy
Greeters: Bob Case & Susan Teegen-Case
Lenten Soup Lunch: Jim Gerhard, Lee Pugh & Verona Stern
Counting Offering: Todd Koser & Angela Kent
Taking Recycling: Jim Thacker
Taking Food Donations to Cathedral: Mike Ehling

MARCH 28
MAUNDY THURSDAY

On this evening we remember and celebrate the final supper Jesus shared with
his disciples in the context of Passover. The Tenebrae worship service (or
"service of the shadows") includes readings, prayer and song, with communion.
Please join us in the sanctuary at 7pm.

MARCH 29
GOOD FRIDAY

Please join us and Heeding God's Call in observing Good Friday at a city-wide
ecumenical service to worship in prayer, music, scripture and the word;
remember the suffering and violence of Good Friday and grieve for those killed
by guns in the Philadelphia region; and heed God’s call to act together for an
end to gun violence, particularly for the children.

Good Friday Vigil
March 29, 2013, 4 pm

Begin at St. Paul’s Baptist Church, 1000 Wallace Street (at 10th St.); proceed
to Benjamin Franklin High School, 550 N. Broad (one block north of Spring Garden)

Heeding God's Call

Facebook: Heeding God's Call

MARCH 31
EASTER SUNDAY

Texts: Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24 & John 20:1-18

Resurrection

"I have seen the Lord, I have seen the Lord!" These are the words of Mary
Magdalene, uttering the unbelievable. She proclaims to the depressed,
fearful disciples and to the world, that death--in all its destructive
forms--is not the final answer. "Death has been swallowed up in victory,"
says the prophet Isaiah and Paul in I Corinthians. Can we hear this
unbelievable news again? Join us for worship on this Resurrection Sunday.

Preaching: Kathryn Aikins
Writing Prayers: Susan Wargo
Liturgist: Beverly Dale
Shepherds: Don Wargo & Russell Baldwin
A/V Tech: Bill Simpson
Quote: Megan Gibson
Co-Officiating Communion: Beverly Dale, Katie Day, Maurine Doggett

& Katie Aikins
Setting up & serving Communion: Jim Thacker & Susan Wargo
Cleaning up & serving Communion: Pauline Abernathy & Chris Purdom
Picking up donated Communion Bread: Lee Pugh
Greeters: Todd Koser & Katrina Culley
Tab Community Potluck Coffee Hour (overseeing): Andy & Lynn Lees
Counting Offering: Ginny Rice & Donald Wargo
Taking Recycling: Rachel Wentworth
Taking Food Donations to Cathedral: Megan Gibson

Sunday, March 17, New Sanctuary Movement is sponsoring a prayerful
march and rally in support of just and humane immigration reform.
Marchers will depart from four points in the city and convene at Love
Park at 3pm. The West Philly contingent will depart from Tab at 1:45
pm. Due to the unfortunate cancellation of Maura Contreras' visit, we
will also use the Tab.edu session this Sunday to prepare signs and
practice songs for the afternoon march. Please join us in our preparation at Tab.edu
even if you are not able to participate in the march, or march with us even if you can't
come to Tab.edu! Other groups will be marching at the following locations and times:

North Philly - Visitation Church, 300 E.
Come explore the mystical and divine world of humming, chanting and
toning with the extraordinary vocal duo HARC (Ruth Cunningham and
Ana Hernandez) as they take us through a journey of tapping deeper
into our singersoul-filled selves, enabling us to develop a deeper
and richer practice of opening up our voices to become more grounded
in our daily lives, personally and professionally.

Ana Hernández & Ruth Cunningham

Whether you are a singer, instrumentalist, healthcare professional, priest, teacher,
therapist, body worker, or hospice worker, the more you know yourself (and your own
vibration) and connect to who you are in your heart, the more effective you are at
staying grounded and bringing your wholeness into any situation. These practices can
support you in doing this. They are also good for your health; stress is reduced,
endorphins are released, circulation improves, and clarity and focus are sharpened.

HARC is Ruth Cunningham and Ana Hernández. Ana and Ruth have been collaborating
performers and sound healers since 2001. They have two cross-cultural chant CDs:
HARC: Inside Chants and Blessed by Light. Their music makes use of texts from
Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, and Jewish sources and combines them with musical
traditions as far-flung as the joyous repetition of Indian Kirtan, the simple harmony
of Irish folk songs and the pure sound of medieval chant. In addition to newly
composed and traditional tunes, they enjoy creating improvised counterpoint. They
have facilitated experiences of healing sound and chant at conferences, workshops,
and concerts, and are often called upon to create innovative liturgies. The work
of HARC comes out of their individual practice and experience with chanting and
sacred sound, and their desire to share with others the potential of sound and music
to transform lives.

Ruth Cunningham is a founding member of the vocal ensemble Anonymous 4 and a
sound healing practitioner. With Anonymous 4, Ruth has performed in concerts and
festivals throughout the United States, Europe and the Far East and made twelve
recordings. Ruth's most recent solo CD releases are Light and Shadow: Chants,
Prayers and Improvisations and Harpmodes: Journey for Voice and Harp. She is
certified as a cross-cultural music healing practitioner and has also studied vocal
improvisation for many years with Rhiannon.

Ana Hernández is a composer/arranger, multi-instrumentalist, and workshop leader.
She has produced seven CDs, and is author of The Sacred Art of Chant: Preparing to
Practice, about the use of chanting as a spiritual discipline. She leads workshops on
the uses of sound to revitalize prayer and build open-hearted, engaged communities.

DATE/TIME: Saturday, April 27, 10 am to 6 pm

Participation fee: $85 adult regular; $40 students

(Discounts available for groups of 10 or more!)

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Monday, April 22nd, 2013.

Contact Director of Music, Holly Phares, at 215-514-1696 or
holmus@aol.com for further information.

The United Church of Christ and the
Presbyterian Church (USA) have joined with millions of other
Christians through One Great Hour of Sharing to share God's love
with people experiencing need. Our gifts support ministries of
disaster response, refugee assistance and resettlement, and
community development that help people find safe refuge, start
new lives and work together to strengthen their families and
communities.

FEBRUARY 24
SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT

Texts: Psalm 27, Philippians 3:17-4:1 & Luke 13:31-35

The Cross and Non-violence

Dr. King said, "The cross is the eternal expression of the length to which God
will go in order to restore broken community." (Stride Toward Freedom). One way
of describing our journey through the season of Lent is to say that we are
walking with Jesus toward the cross. This is a difficult reflection. The cross
symbolizes hate and violence. So what does it mean to proclaim to be on this
path, toward the cross? Dr. King and other prophets remind us that the journey
toward the cross is ultimately about a commitment to a life of non-violent love
in a world full of hate.

Preaching: Kathryn Aikins
Writing Prayers: Deb Burnham
Liturgist: Pauline Abernathy
Shepherds: Bill Simpson & Ginny Rice
A/V Tech: Barbara Purdom
Quote: Pauline Abernathy
Greeters: Sarah Hill & Chris Purdom
Lenten Soup Lunch: Deb Ahrens, Deb Burnham & Holly Phares
Counting Offering: Jean Erb & Rachel Wentworth
Taking Recycling: Ginny Rice
Taking Food Donations to Cathedral: Sam & Verona Stern

MARCH 3
THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT

Texts: Prayer by Reinhold Neibuhr (below), Isaiah 55:1-9 & Luke 13:1-9

Repentance and Recovery

The season of Lent encourages us to reflect deeply on our lives and examine our
personal and social needs for recovery. We will explore the importance of
practicing repentance as a pathway to sobriety and peace. The prophet Isaiah
invites all of us who are thirsty to come to the waters that satisfy and to eat
food that is good. To be honest about our hurtful ways is not to beat ourselves
up, but rather to be realistic about our lives. We need God and we need one
another on this journey.

Preaching: Kathryn Aikins
Prayers: Katie Day
Liturgist: Jean Erb
Shepherds: Russell Baldwin & Anne Whiting
A/V Tech: Todd Koser
Quote: Bill Simpson
Co-officiating Communion: Jean Erb & Kathryn Aikins
Setting & serving Communion: Jim Gerhard
Cleaning up & serving Communion: Deborah Ahrens
Picking up Communion bread: Barbara Tilley
Greeters: Ginny & John Rice
Lenten Soup Lunch: Sarah Hill, Jean Erb & Barbara Tilley
Counting Offering: Maurine Doggett & Angela Kent
Taking Recycling: Jim Gerhard
Taking Food Donations to Cathedral: Barbara Purdom

---------------------

God, give me grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.
Amen.

~Reinhold Neibuhr

MARCH 10
FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT

Texts: II Corinthians 5:16-21 & Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32

Ministry of Reconciliation

The passage from Paul's letter to the Corinthians is one that many of us have
heard before: "If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old
has passed away; see everything has become new." Paul is saying that this
"newness in Christ" is what we experience as we engage in the ministry of
reconciliation. This is a ministry to which all are called. Why would
reconciliation ministry be so important to Paul? Themes of reconciliation also
occur in the parable that Jesus tells to anyone who has ears to hear.

Preaching: Kathryn Aikins
Writing Prayers: Chris Purdom
Liturgist: Richard Kalwaic
Shepherds: Todd Koser & Donald Wargo
A/V Tech: Barbara Purdom
Quote: Sarah Hill
Greeters: Geneva Butz & Anne Whiting
Lenten Soup Lunch: Jim Gerhard, Susan Pierce & Katie Day
Counting Offering: Vic Compher & Ken Gritter
Taking Recycling: Susan Teegen-Case
Taking Food Donations to Cathedral: Jim Thacker

MARCH 17
FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT

Texts: Isaiah 43:16-21 & John 12:1-8

Making a Way out of No Way

Isaiah speaks of God "making a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert."
John's gospel tells the story of Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, who
"makes a way" for Jesus to continue on in his journey toward the cross. Mary's
ministry to Jesus is a witness to the meaning of discipleship, of being a present
to those who face difficulty, of helping to make a way out of no way.

Preaching: Kathryn Aikins
Writing Prayers: Beverly Dale
Liturgist: Ken Gritter
Shepherds: Vic Compher & Lynn Lees
A/V Tech: Richard Kalwaic
Quote: Roxanne Parker
Greeters: Sam & Verona Stern
Lenten Soup Lunch: Katherine Huseman, Lynn Lees & Angela Kent
Counting Offering: Deb Ahrens & Jim Thacker
Taking Recycling: Geneva Butz
Taking Food Donations to Cathedral: Jim Gerhard

In the Hebrew Scriptures, the
wilderness is a place of wandering, struggle and hostility. And yet, it is in
the wilderness where the people of God grow in their awareness of themselves
and in their trust of Yahweh. The sacred stories from Deuteronomy and Luke guide
us to reflect on what it means to be led by the Spirit, to grow in our awareness
of ourselves and to deepen our walk with God.

We will also be distributing the One Great Hour fish banks this Sunday and
receiving two new members of the congregation.

Preaching: Kathryn Aikins
Writing Prayers: Susan Wargo
Liturgist: Sam Stern
Shepherds: Todd Koser & Ginny Rice
A/V Tech: Bob Case
Quote: Katherine Huseman
Greeters: Andy & Lynn Lees
Lenten Soup Lunch: Deb Burnham, Katie Day & Geneva Butz
Counting Offering: Jim Gerhard & Mike Ehling
Taking Recycling: Verona Stern
Taking Food Donations to Cathedral: Maurine Doggett

Wednesday February 13, 6-7 pm

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent, a 40-day
journey toward the cross and the hope of Easter. It is a time when we
are asked to pay particular attention to the ways in which we need to "turn around"
(repent!) and practice reconciliation with God, ourselves and our neighbors. All are
welcome to join us for a time of Scripture reading, meditation, singing and
reflection as we turn our hearts, minds and bodies toward this journey.

The Bible study group and all others are welcome to come early at 5:30pm for check-in
and sharing.

As such we are to clothe ourselves with garments of compassion, love
and patience. In other words, we are to "put on" Christ. This is odd imagery and
in fact, odd clothing to wear in our culture! The story of the "Three" Wise "Men" (nowhere identified as three or men)
feels familiar and gentle, yet looking closer identifies a warning of violent things to
come. The Psalm appears here in a sanitized form, but including all verses reveals some
of the harshness of our feelings toward our enemies. What can we learn from thinking
about archaic things like kings and vengeful feelings toward our enemies? Plenty,
namely the path to a more peaceful way of being.

Preaching: Robert McClellan
Writing Prayers: Chris Purdom
Liturgist: Ginny Rice
Shepherds: Todd Koser & Lynn Lees
A/V Tech: Chris Purdom & Richard Kalwaic
Quote: Mike Ehling
Co-officiating Communion: Robert McClellan & Maurine Doggett
Setting up & serving Communion: Mike Ehling
Cleaning up & serving Communion: Ken Gritter
Picking up donated Communion bread: Barbara Tilley
Greeters: Bob Case & Jim Gerhard
Hosting GEM Potluck: Katherine Huseman & Andy Lees
Counting Offering: Russell Baldwin & Susan Teegen-Case
Taking Recycling: Barbara Purdom
Taking Food Donations to Cathedral: Megan Gibson

JANUARY 13
THE BAPTISM OF JESUS

Texts: Isaiah 43:1-7 & Matthew 16:13-20

Keys to the Kingdom

Jesus tells his disciples, "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven."
On my last Sunday, I want to talk about the keys to Tabernacle's way of being.
In the end, it comes down to the community's collective answer to Jesus' question,
"Who do you say that I am?"
