Worship Themes for December

December 6

SECOND SUNDAY IN ADVENT: PEACE SUNDAY

Texts: Luke 1:68-79 & Luke 3:1-6

John the Baptist, a mentor to Jesus, was himself a prophet who spoke truth to power in the shadow of the Roman Empire. He called for people to change their ways and turn around (repent!). It is true that "waiting" for the coming of Jesus is the theme of Advent. And yet, as John the Baptist teaches us, it is not an idle waiting, but an active waiting that demands repentance and change, both in our hearts and in the world.

THIRD SUNDAY IN ADVENT: LOVE SUNDAY

Texts: Isaiah 12:2-6 & Luke 3:7-18

John's sermon has passion and apocalyptic fire! And yet his sermon moves quickly to the very practical: Don't threaten or manipulate! Be fair! Share your possessions! In short, preparing the way of the Lord looks like everyday practical acts of faithfulness to God. There are always around us opportunities to do God's will and be God's people. Participation in God's new reign is available to us where we are right now.

Texts: Colossians 3:12-17 & Luke 2:41-52

Howard Thurman reminds us in his poem "The Work of Christmas", that it is really after the season has ended, that the work of Christmas truly begins. So although Christmas day has come and gone, we remember that the call on our lives is to begin now to "clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness and patience...and to allow the peace of Christ to rule in our hearts" (Col. 3:12-17). We worship the Christ who has come, and is always still coming.
