THANKSGIVING SUNDAY/REIGN OF CHRIST

Texts: 1 Samuel 8:10-18, Psalm 93 & John 18:33-37

The Bible repeatedly tells us that God's power and majesty differ radically from the reign of human monarchs. God's reign is the negative of these images. God's love, God's power, and God's actively gathering us into God's reign requires breaking through human barriers.

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT: HOPE SUNDAY

Texts: Jeremiah 33:14-16 & Luke 21:25-36

Despite the challenges of the present time, we not only can endure, we can be full of hope. Our gospel reading today for the first of Advent is apocalyptic and might come across to us as alien or strange. And yet the message might be more relevant than we think. Despite all these things taking place, we can "stand up and raise our heads, because our redemption is drawing near."
