DECEMBER 7

SECOND SUNDAY IN ADVENT

Isaiah 40:1-11 & Mark 1:1-8

While we are waiting...peace

"Comfort, O comfort my people, speak tenderly to Jerusalem...In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God." These are the powerful words of the prophet Isaiah who is declaring a second exodus for the people of God. He envisions mountains made low and a highway throughout the desert that leads to God. Much later, John the Baptizer adopts Isaiah's words as he calls people to turn around and repent and create pathways that lead to God and to peace. While we are waiting, may we create highways that lead to peace.

THIRD SUNDAY IN ADVENT

Psalm 126 & John 1:6-8, 19-28

While we are waiting...joy

"When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. Then our mouth was filled with laughter and our tongue with shouts of joy; then it was said among the nations: 'The Lord has done great things for them.' The Lord has done great things for us, and we rejoiced. Restore our fortunes, O Lord!"

Today we focus on the words of this psalm and give thanks for the courage and spirit of John the Baptizer who testified to the light coming into the world. While we are waiting, may we know joy.
