DECEMBER 15

THIRD SUNDAY IN ADVENT

Texts: Matthew 1:18-25 & Psalm 146:5-10

Love

Finding our Fathers: Joseph is often a silent and shadowy figure in the Nativity story--
a supporting actor at best. And yet he played a pivotal role in the birth and life of
Jesus, making critical decisions in this small, poor family that helped them to survive
and pursue higher purposes. It is appropriate, then, that we remember Joseph on the 3rd
week in Advent, the theme of which is Love. We will also remember all those who have
been fathers to us, helping us to find life and meaning.

The Work of Christmas

The theologian and mystic, Howard Thurman, wrote this poem entitled The Work
of Christmas
:

When the song of the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flock,
The work of Christmas begins:
To find the lost,
To the heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To rebuild the nations,
To bring peace among brothers (and sisters),
To make music in the heart.

This Sunday we will read about Anna and Simeon, who received, recognized and
blessed the baby Jesus as he was being consecrated in the temple. They had been
waiting in expectation for the consolation of Israel and saw in Jesus the hope
that was to come. The work of Christmas does not end with the celebration of
Christmas. Indeed, the vision is still before us.
